The Art of Raga
Conception of Ragas and understanding all the parameters of Ragas form the foundation of Ragdari Music. This living art has an insatiable thirst and is practised through different genres of music.
High classical styles include Dhrupada, Dhamara and Khayala, including traditional Bandish and intricate compositions or Cheej in musical terminology.
Light classical styles include Thumri such as Banaras Anga, Punjabi Anga and Bandishi Thumri, along with Dadara, Tappa, Bhajans and poetry-oriented popular styles such as Ghazals.
The efforts to preserve contemporary Gharana music, extensive in its coverage and selective in its method, are an integral part of the musical practice at Sangeet Sadhana.
Why Learn Classical Music
Knowing your roots is an important aspect of any civilisation. India is known throughout the world for its unique cultural heritage, ranging from Yoga and medicine to literature, music, dance and drama.
Hindustani Classical Music is one of the great examples of this cultural heritage. The Mughal era marks an important period in the development of Hindustani music and demonstrates how cultural diversity can enrich an artistic tradition.
Hindustani Classical Music strengthens and builds the voice. Voice culture includes flexibility of voice while developing breath control, uniformity, clarity, articulation, resonance and vocal range.
Hours of dedicated Riyaz or practice develop the ability to render every note and every rhythm in its designated place. This disciplined musical accuracy gradually leads the learner towards greater aesthetics and refinement.
Indian Classical Music is a rich musical tradition filled with complexity. Its performance requires many years of study, regular practice and discipline.
The Guru-Shishya relationship is of paramount importance in mastering fundamental techniques and experiencing their resonance within oneself.
A student learns Raga theory and practice primarily through listening, observation and the musical tradition passed down by the Guru. Years of dedicated training between Guru and disciple help establish these musical foundations.
Structured Curriculum
Hindustani Vocal Classes at Sangeet Sadhana are structured across Basic, Intermediate and Advanced levels.
The purpose of this class is to give Swaragyan. Elementary lessons or Swaradhyaya of Shruti, Swara, Sur and Tala (Talagyan), Sargams, rules of Raagas, Aroha-Avaroha, Vadi-Samvadis, Swar Sangatis, Pakad and Paltas are introduced.
Students learn to listen to Thekas of Taal and keep a mental note of Tala while demonstrating. Concepts of Saptak and Thaat Paddhati or parent scales are also taught.
Particular emphasis is laid on reproducing music in notation. Theory and evolution of Classical Music, differences between allied Ragas, their catch notes, proper pronunciation and Bol Banana are discussed in detail.
Students understand the aesthetic structure of Ragas and the elements associated with musical expression. At this stage they develop the ability to identify Raagas and understand their dynamics.
Analysis of Ragas with similar or identical scales and note patterns is introduced along with ornamentations such as Meend, Kana, Khatka and Murki in the delineation of Raga.
Students listen intently to practical demonstrations of musicians and learn to identify note formations within compositions.
At the Advanced Level students learn to understand and render compositions modified to suit their individual artistic capability.
Artistic accomplishment is developed through mastery over complex Taans and high-tempo Sa-Re-Ga-Ma ornamentation within the framework of a Raga, gradually developing musical craftsmanship of a high order.
To spread Classical Music among Rasikas, Sangeet Sadhana arranges musical concerts and workshops and brings stalwarts of vocal and instrumental music belonging to different Gharanas onto one platform.
